Hello and Welcome to Forge By Fothergill, let me tell you about myself. My name is Freddie Fothergill I am 19 years old and I have been playing sport for as long as I can remember. Sport to me has been my identity and my way of living. I truly believe it has moulded me into the young man I am today. My goal to you is to not only improve you as an athlete but for you to carry the accolades playing sport presents to you into life. Let me share a little bit about my journey.
A young kid with an obsession to have a ball at his feet. At age 11 i was signed for York City Academy, a Professional club located in the North of England. Soccer was my life, my purpose and my identity. I can remember vividly the joy and excitement I had when playing Soccer, it was all I could think about on a daily basis. At age 11 i had a relentless competitive drive to win, Coming home crying my eyes out after loosing was not far from reality, I discovered a hatred towards loosing.
Practicing for hours every night was normal for me, I simply did not know anything else.
I had a dream from a young age, a vision which I genuinley believed in. That vision was becoming a professional soccer player.
At age 13 the love and passion I had for the sport was only amplified, as I continued my journey with York City I began to understand the life of an Athlete. Playing at this level I began to understand the pressure that came with it and the sacrifices I would have to make in order for me to succeed. However for me it was very simple i wanted this to be my life.
At age 15 I was attending one of the best Schools in England. I was offered a sports scholarship at Queen Ethelburgas. For me this was a dream, being extremely lucky to have this opportunity is something I will cherish for life.
As I continued my journey with York City Academy, Attending one of the best schools in England for sport only benefited me, I had access to world class facilities with elite level coaching. With this in the palm of my hands it only made me more hungry to succeed.
I am 15 years old and I have just won the National Junior Premier League for York City Academy. The feeling of winning was like no other, throughout my journey I have always done whatever it has taken to win. However, being gracious in defeat and always condoning myself as a true sportsman has always been a must.
At 16 years old I was released from York City Academy. I remember crying my eyes out in my mothers arms. It felt like my whole world had ended, I felt broken. Being a kid who identified himself with the sport this was a huge challenge for me however I did what I could. I laced those boots up again and got back out there.
As time went on I picked myself back up and carried the mindset of never giving up no matter what, I got offerd a 2 year scholarship program for a club called UFCA. An exceptional club playing at a very high level competing against teams like Liverpool FC, Everton FC and many more clubs of high stature.
As I completed my 2 year scholarship program with UFCA having 2 very successful years competing and winning at a very high level. I noticed a reduced love in playing the sport and discovered a new very passionate love for Boxing.
Me and my best friend traveled to New York to watch a Boxing match whilst being lucky enough to have my Uncle and Aunt offer me and my friend hospitality for the week. Being in New York me and my friend wanted to find a Boxing gym to train at whilst being overseas, we discoverd Gleasons Gym, a remarkable world wide known boxing gym with the likes of Mike Tyson and Muhammed Ali previously training out of it. Being lucky enough to train at this gym was an extremely surreal feeling, as the week went on we met a coach in the gym. His name was William Badillo, a boxing coach with 18 former world champions. He was impressed with the dedication and the love me and my friend had for the sport, at the end of the week he said he wanted us to visit again as he was interested in working with us.
6 months later i am living in New York studying for a Degree under Health and Human performance, I am training out of the most famous Boxing gym in the world in Gleasons Gym as well as being taken on by a world class Boxing coach. I still can not believe to this day how my hard work and dedication to the sport has allowed me to be under these circumstances, as I previously said from a young age I have had a relentless belief in myself. Allow this to prove to you if you work hard enough and you believe in yourself enough you will succeed and achieve monumental things that you will carry throughout life.
If you told this boy when you are 19 you will be Boxing at the worlds most famous boxing gym he would of believed you, the reason being is I have always has an indefatigable belief in myself in all realms of life, I am very proud and content of the journey Soccer has allowed me to have, I have not only learnt a great deal on the pitch however soccer has taught me resilience, teamwork, sportsmanship, purpose and many more qualities and skills needed in the real world. I am certainly grateful to even have the opportunity for all these achievements along the way, if it wasn't for my family around me supporting this dream, you simply would not be reading this.
The life I have lived throughout my Soccer journey has allowed me to have this opportunity regarding Boxing, I am now on a new journey and pathway. I am exceptionally grateful my family is supporting this new dream of mine, I will continue on my new path and succeed in doing so.
If you have read this far I would like to thank you for you taking the time to read about my story, it means more than you can imagine.
Having learned a great deal through the years of my Soccer journey my aim is to give back, I want to help both on and off the pitch about some of the struggles younger athletes will experience, not only do I want to improve their Soccer ability but I want them to understand the skills and qualities sport presents to you and use these to develop into a better person.
For me Sport is more than kicking a ball, its the brotherhood we find ourselves in, being able to share experiences, the highs and lows allows us to deal with loosing and also deal with winning. I believe sport demands resilience, being able to deal with failure and setbacks is a skill which is required throughout life. Sport will present tremendous highs and an abudance of lows however it is the journey of going through both which will improve not only an athlete but a person.
My mission is to help Athletes partaking in Soccer to firstly gain knowledge on the game through game IQ and tactics, improve their technical ability and ball mastery skills and most importantly create a rapport with whoever I am working with.
Being in a professional environment for many years I have learnt a significant amount of lessons both on and off the pitch, I believe I have the qualities and skills to portray my knowledge to other young athletes but more importantly because I want to.
I will create a one to one coaching program tailored to the athletes needs, desires and goals. With this there will be on and off pitch private tutoring going through each and every aspect of the game, focussing on becoming better in all areas of the game. With my knowledge and passion towards improvement I believe i can accomplish that.
